Safe & Sound logo  The Issues

The Children’s Society took me in. They looked after me. They cared about me… They won’t let me take my tablets when I want to overdose. They stop me doing stupid things.

Did you know?
  • A quarter of all runaways are under the age of 11

  • One in seven of all young runaways spend more than a week away

  • 33% of children who sleep rough resort to stealing, begging or selling drugs

  • 25% of children run away three times or more

  • 53% of repeat runaways first run away by the age of 11

  • Around two thirds of children who run stay in their local area, one in five run to the nearest city while one in seven go further afield

Still Running The Children’s Society research (1999), drew upon a representative sample of almost 13,000 young people in 25 areas of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. It provided these major insights into the disturbing phenomenon of young people running away - issues that refuse to go away.

Exploding the myths

Our research shows running away is far more closely linked to emotional and relationship problems than to economic disadvantage.
Also, young runaways come from all sections of society, irrespective of wealth, ethnicity or geographical areas.
