Making England Safe for young runaways
Safe & Sound logo  The Issues (contd.)

The Children’s Society took me in. They looked after me. They cared about me… They won’t let me take my tablets when I want to overdose. They stop me doing stupid things.
Tina, 15

Reseach shows:
  • Young runaways come from all sections of society, but rates of running away are highest among young white people (10%) compared to children of African Caribbean orgin (7.5%) and those of Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi orgin (5.5%)
However, children from ethnic minorities who run away are more likely to stay away for longer.
Once on the streets these children are at grave risk.

  • Almost half of all children who had been away for more than a week had been physically or sexually hurt. Want more information?
Although it is very important to understand why these children run away, it is of utmost urgency that children who do end up on the streets have somewhere safe to turn and someone sound to talk to.

That is the mission of Safe and Sound. Tell me more about the campaign.>
