Messages of Support
The following messages had been issued by leading public figures
in support of the Safe and Sound Campaign:
“The Children’s Society has been instrumental in
drawing attention to the problems facing young runaways. These young
people need a timely response that offers them safe accommodation,
and the support to tackle the reasons that they are away from home.
The Children’s Society’s Safe and Sound campaign plays
a valuable role in reminding all those who work in children’s
services of their responsibilities towards children who run away
from, or have been rejected by, their families.”
The Rt. Hon. Tony Blair MP, Prime Minister
“The Children’s Society is performing an extremely
important role in providing support for young runaways, who without
their help risk drifting into danger. Clearly we need to do more
to support stable family homes, but where this is impossible and
children are under threat, it is incumbent on local authorities
and other agencies to step in and provide integrated protection
and care. The Children’s Society is a key player in this approach
and I wish their work well.”
The Rt. Hon. Michael Howard QC MP, Leader
of the Conservative Party
“I warmly welcome the Safe and Sound campaign from The
Children's Society. This initiative will help improve the lives
of 1000's of young people by providing somewhere safe and warm for
runaway children to go to. The trauma of leaving home for a child
is unimaginable. For children to not even have a roof over their
heads or a bed to sleep in is both tragic and unacceptable. The
Safe and Sound initiative will go a long way to ensuring that local
authorities provide these young people with accommodation and basic
support. The Children's Society deserve great praise for this campaign
and for the continuing good work they do.”
The Rt. Hon. Charles Kennedy MP, Leader of
the Liberal Democrat Party
“The Children’s Society is committed to seeing
children whole, and to enabling us all to share that seeing. It
is in that sense simply taking its lead from Christ… We can
give thanks for all that The Children’s Society has done in
telling unwelcome truths.”
The Most Rev. Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop
of Canterbury and President of The Children’s Society
